BrandU vs HeyGen

If you are looking for a HeyGen alternative, the reason is usually the same one. Every fix costs another generation. One user described six hours trying to get a single one-minute video right. Their words: "I tell it what's wrong, and then one thing is corrected and another is messed up again." HeyGen makes polished talking-head video from a script, and it is good at that. BrandU solves a different problem. It takes a video that already works and rebuilds the selling structure behind it around your product. Editing it re-renders instead of regenerating.

HeyGen at a glance

HeyGen is an AI video platform for talking-head video. You bring a script, pick or create an avatar, and it generates a presenter-led video. It ships with 700+ stock avatars, voice cloning and translation across 175+ languages. Its Avatar V model learns a person's gestures and mannerisms from a 15-second recording. Plans run from a free quota to $149/month.

Who should use which

Pick HeyGen for presenter-led video, multi-language delivery, or enterprise training. Pick BrandU when the winning asset is a video you can point at. Pick it too when you expect to iterate many times before the video ships.

What sends people looking for a HeyGen alternative

The credit meter moves faster than the work does. HeyGen bills a generation every time you change the script, the presenter or the language. A video that needs five rounds of feedback costs five generations, even though four of those rounds changed nothing on screen.

Avatar work is a project, not a step. Building a custom Avatar V means recording reference footage, waiting on training, and re-training if the likeness drifts. That is the right investment when the avatar is the product. It is overhead when you just need the ad to say something different.

The format starts from zero. HeyGen is a presenter-led studio: you bring the script and the face, and it renders. If what already works in your category is a two-person skit with captions and B-roll, you are building that structure by hand. And you are building it in a tool that has no concept of it.

One video, one deliverable. HeyGen returns the video you asked for. It does not return a format you can re-run next week with a different product, which is the thing that actually compounds.

The pricing model decides how you work, not just what you pay. When every change is a generation, you batch feedback, and you argue about wording in a doc instead of in the product. You also ship fewer versions, because each one is a purchase. The tool ends up shaping the process.

None of that is a knock on HeyGen's engineering. It is a consequence of what the product is built to sell: a rendered video, priced per render. We sell a format, priced per month, and the incentives point somewhere else.

Where HeyGen is the better pick

  • Real talking-head video. Avatar V learns a person's gestures, expressions and mannerisms from a 15-second recording. BrandU does not make digital humans at all.
  • Presenters at scale. 700+ stock avatars, voice cloning and translation into 175+ languages. That is useful when the same message has to go out in twenty markets.
  • Enterprise controls. SSO, SCIM, SCORM export and LMS integration. If your videos are internal training, this matters more than anything else on this page.
  • Script-first is simple. If you already have the script and just need it performed, there is nothing to learn.

HeyGen's reference video is not a reference ad

When HeyGen takes a video, that video is a 15-second recording of a person. Its own documentation says so. Avatar V, in its words, "learns your gestures, expressions, and mannerisms from this single clip." The goal is that the presenter looks and moves like the person you filmed. It is a likeness tool.

When BrandU takes a video, that video is the ad. The pipeline reads the whole thing frame by frame and turns it into a production sheet. That sheet holds the script's argument, how shots connect, when captions land, and where the B-roll cuts in. Then it rebuilds that sheet with your product and your voice.

One tells the camera who is talking. The other works out why anyone kept watching.

Why the starting point matters more than it sounds. Describe a video in words and you are drawing lots. The structure, the pacing and the hook are whatever the model happens to produce, and "better" means re-rolling and paying again. Start from a video that already works and the structure is not a gamble. It is the thing you copied.

What gets kept, and what gets swapped

Rebuild a proven video and these eight things carry over. The left column is the structure - the part that made it work. The right column is what becomes yours.

The script is yours to argue with

With a presenter tool, changing your mind means changing the generation. You rewrite the line, pick the take, wait for the render, and pay on the way through. So the script gets frozen early, before you have heard it out loud.

Here the script is a document you edit. Rewrite a line and only that segment regenerates. Restyle it, reorder it, or swap an asset and nothing is sent to the model at all. The change is applied at render time.

You stay on the argument for as long as it takes to get right. The assembly is the tool's job.

Why the credits run out

HeyGen charges by the minute of generated video. Avatar V is 48 credits per minute. That pricing is coherent for a product built the way HeyGen is built. The avatar video is the output, and a change means producing it again.

Reviewers describe the consequence better than any comparison table could. One wrote: "It took so many tries for the system to get my stuff correct that it took me 4 hours, then I ran out of tries because I went over my limit." Another: "6 hours I have been trying to get one simple 1 minute video. I tell it what's wrong and then one thing is corrected and another is messed up again."

What you keep is not a finished file. It is the format itself: a video you can restyle, reorder, rewrite and re-render for the next launch. Once a video exists, changing it does not mean making it again.

BrandU separates generation from rendering. Once a video's segments exist, restyling an element, reordering segments or swapping an asset only re-renders, and the model is not called again. Rewriting one segment re-runs just that segment and its voiceover.

So the cost of a change tracks the size of the change. Fixing your tenth mistake costs about what fixing your first one did, instead of costing another video.

Pricing, side by side

HeyGen: free quota, then $29/month (Creator, 600 credits), $49/month (Pro, 1,000 credits) and $149/month (Business, 1,500 credits). Credits roll over for one billing cycle.

BrandU: from $9.90. One subscription replaces paying per generation, and a fix costs a re-render, not another credit.

Why rendering is usually faster here

HeyGen renders a whole video as one job, so a change early in the timeline can mean waiting on the whole thing again. BrandU builds a video as independent segments: a 30-second piece is five 6-second segments. Because segments are generated and rendered separately, they run in parallel instead of queueing one behind another. In practice a render typically finishes in under an hour.

Long references or peak demand take longer. We would rather say that up front than advertise a guarantee we cannot keep.

A 30-second video broken into five 6-second segments, and what re-renders when you change oneLeft: a 30-second video split into five 6-second segments. Right: changing segment 3 means only that segment runs the model again, while the other four re-render at the same time rather than queueing. A render typically finishes in under an hour.A 30-SECOND VIDEOfive 6-second segmentsWHAT RE-RENDERSYou change segment 3only this one runs the model againThe other four re-render at the same timetypically under an hour
Editing one segment does not rebuild the video. Only the changed segment is regenerated; the rest are re-rendered in parallel.

What waiting actually looks like

Video generation is measured in minutes, not seconds, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Here is what we do about the part you cannot avoid.

  • A draft pass first. The first build returns a low-resolution, fewer-shot version so you can confirm the direction before committing to the full render. You find out it is wrong cheaply, not after the finished file.
  • Real progress, not a fake bar. The progress you see comes from the backend's actual stages. We do not run a timer to make it look busy, because a bar that lies is worse than no bar.
  • Close the tab. Once submitted, the job runs without you. You get notified when it is done instead of watching a spinner.
  • A receipt for what happened. Each run tells you what it cost and how much was reused. Reuse you cannot see is reuse you cannot plan around.

The reason this matters: the editor is instant and the render is not. We keep the fast part genuinely fast, with edits applying at once, and let only the part that must wait, wait.

Switching over

There is not much to migrate, because there is not much to set up.

  • Nothing to re-create. BrandU starts from a link, so you do not rebuild avatars, re-record motion references, or re-train a likeness.
  • Nothing to install. It runs in the browser.
  • Your scripts still work. Paste one as a brief and start from there instead of from a video.

When you should stay with HeyGen

There are cases where HeyGen is simply the right tool, and they are worth naming plainly.

  • You need a presenter library, not one face. HeyGen has 700+ stock avatars and 175+ languages; BrandU works from an avatar you upload yourself.
  • You need enterprise controls. SSO, SCIM, SCORM export and LMS integration. None of that exists here.
  • You need the highest-fidelity likeness. Avatar V is built to reproduce a specific person's gestures and mannerisms from a short recording. BrandU does not target that.

If your bottleneck is a face that has to be recognisable, HeyGen solves a problem we do not touch. If your bottleneck is how many ad versions you can ship per week, that is the one we were built for.

What this looks like in practice

Persona

A small e-commerce brand running the same ad concept across several products

Workflow
Start from the ad that performed best; swap the product and the claims; restyle to match each product page; render as many variants as there are SKUs

Outcome
One proven structure, many products — and the edits cost a fraction of the first render

HeyGen vs BrandU FAQ

Is BrandU a good HeyGen alternative?
They do different jobs. HeyGen produces presenter-led video from a script. BrandU rebuilds the selling structure behind a video that already works, around your product, and edits it without regenerating.
Can HeyGen clone a reference video?
It cannot clone a video's structure. Its video input is a 15-second recording of one person moving. Its own documentation: "Avatar V learns your gestures, expressions, and mannerisms from this single clip."
How much does HeyGen cost?
HeyGen has a free quota, then $29/month (Creator), $49/month (Pro) and $149/month (Business). Its public plans use credits, which roll over for one billing cycle.
Why do HeyGen credits run out so fast?
HeyGen charges by the generated minute. Avatar V is 48 credits per minute, and a change means generating again. Reviewers describe running out mid-project after repeated attempts.
Can I edit without regenerating?
Yes. Restyling, reordering or swapping an asset only re-renders, and the model is not called again. Rewriting one segment re-runs just that segment and its voiceover.
Do I need an avatar?
No. BrandU does not put a presenter on screen; it rebuilds the structure of a video that already performs.
What do I need to switch?
A link. There are no avatars to rebuild, no motion references to re-record, and nothing to install.
